The island of Male, capital of the Maldives Islands in the Indian Ocean, is, like South Florida, at ground zero of our planet’s sea level rise risk. At a maximum elevation of 2.4 meters (about 8 feet), even small rises in the ocean will sink or submerge much of the land. To attempt to mitigate the impact of sea rise the Maldives’ government has built a sea wall around the entire island.
