It’s All About The U
Again & Again

When I decided to apply to the University of Miami as an Early Decision applicant, I just knew in my heart that the “U” and studying here in South Florida was the right decision and place for me. After four years, a Bachelor’s in Science and double-majoring in Marine Science and Coastal Geology, in addition to earning my minor in Climate Policy through the Rosensteil School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, I can happily share that my intuition was right: the University of Miami and staying here in my beloved South Florida was the perfect place for me.

Over the summer, some of you have kindly asked me “what’s next?” and before I share that news with you, allow me to thank a few incredibly special, supportive, and inspirational people in and out of the classroom over these four years while a Miami Hurricane.

I’d be remiss to not thank the University and everyone involved in honoring me with a Foote Fellowship, as well as a Singer Scholarship, and along the way allowing me to participate in all sorts of campus organizations including and even being named recipient of the Roberta “Bosey” Fulbright Foote Prize last year by President Frenk. Allow me to give a special shout out to Dr. Jim Klaus for being my trusty advisor and who helped me resurrect the Geology Honor Society (Sigma Gamma Epsilon), Teddy L’houtellier for his amazing support of my roles within the Student Government ECO Board and Green Committee, plus my passion to see solar all over campus.

So what’s next?

Well, I am humbly proud to share that I’ve been accepted into the dual degree program here at the University of Miami’s Abbess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy where over the next several years I will have the incredible opportunity to earn both Juris Doctorate and a Ph.D. while being able to work on a range of environmental issues and causes that are deeply important to me. As part of my acceptance and scholarship I will also have the opportunity to act as a Teaching Assistant, in addition to having the ability to continue to purse my passion for protecting our fragile environment from a range of threats whether they be sea level rise, oil drilling or increasing temperatures.

As I head off on this new academic adventure allow me to thank (Kenny Broad, Catherine Macdonald, Harold Wanless, Gina Maranto, Joseph Matthews, Katrin Schroll, Jessica Owley, and Abigail Fleming) for their kind support of my graduate school application, as well as my passion to explore and protect our environment. I am forever grateful.

Having followed in the footsteps of my grandfather, father, and mother (all Miami graduates) I’ve always been enormously proud of my heritage as a Miami Hurricane, but the idea that one day soon I will be a three-time graduate is, admittedly, pretty incredible. The University of Miami has always been ever so supportive of my educational and environmental dreams in ways that I will likely never be able to repay but will certainly never, ever forget.

My graduate school adventure starts with a requirement that I complete my first year of law school over the next 12 months. I’ve never, of course, attended law school but am consistently told that the first year requires an enormous amount of time and dedication (along with at least a few tears!). With that commitment in mind, I am not yet certain about how much time I will truly be able to dedicate to The Sink or Swim Project in the near term but will, as always, do my very best to stay active and engaged in fighting for what’s important.

I can say, however, that I am excited to put in the hard work that graduate school deserves and to gain the knowledge it portrays so as to allow me to spend the rest of my life pursing my passions in the field as a scientist, in the halls of justice as a lawyer, and, with any luck, inspiring and teaching future generations of thought leaders and agents of change as an educator.

As a graduate, much less now a grad student, making a difference in our world and giving back to our society is what being a Miami Hurricane truly means to me. As I’ve said before, for me it’s All About The U and as I step off on this next grand educational adventure I want to thank my entire Miami Hurricane family, friends, mentors, and colleagues for your never ending support.

The Summer of Sharks

As I have written here before, I love sharks.

Every size and type of shark intrigues me and the more I encounter these amazing creatures, the more I want to learn. In fact, one of my goals this summer has been to spend at least 30 days aboard research vessels catching, tagging, collecting scientific data on and releasing sharks. I am happy to report that I expect to accomplish or exceed my goal and that my summer of sharks has been incredible.

Thankfully I live in a region of the world that allows me to study these amazing creatures and that’s particularly the case because of my college. I’m fortunate to attend one of the leading marine science schools in the world, the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, and am deeply honored to be part of the small team that makes up Dr. Neil Hammerschlag’s renowned Shark Research and Conversation (SRC) Lab.

From nurse sharks, like the one above, and great hammerheads to black tips and tiger sharks to just about everything in between that you can imagine, we see them all in our work with SRC. In my own work this summer, over the course of almost 30 days in the field on board research vessels, I have been fortunate to have helped catch, study and tag at least 10 different species of sharks through my internship with SRC and as a student of the Field School’s Elasmobranch Course.

My summer began with a week-long trip out of Key West where we traveled to the Dry Tortugas and lived aboard the Field School’s Research Vessel Garvin. I was honored to have been selected for the trip and work with the incredible people from the Field School, as well as members of the SRC team so as to study the Tortuga’s Gulf of Mexico shark population.

During our week offshore, not only were we able to dive some exquisite sunken wrecks covered in all sorts of colorful tropical fish species and sea turtles, but we also caught, tagged and collected biological samples on 27 different sharks (8 species total) before gently releasing them back into the wild. The SRC and Field School teams also spent another two weeks in the Dry Tortugas where they caught and released 51 more sharks for a total of 78 over the three weeks of research we performed there in May and June.

I then spent another week on the RV Garvin with the Field School staff as we sailed the waters off the coast of Miami out in the Atlantic Ocean. Each day we performed science on the sharks that we caught and released and learned about their role and importance within our natural environment as an apex species. During that week we caught and released some very cool species including bonnethead sharks, blacknose sharks and even a smalltooth sawfish that we quickly released back into the water before reporting our sighting to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as is required due to their highly endangered status. Protecting important species like the sawfish or the great hammerhead is critical to every element of our environment and the news out of Washington, which you can read here, that the Trump Administration wants to reduce those protections is deeply disappointing.

In the event that you are curious about such scientific work, what we do when catching and releasing sharks, I’ve included a few pictures within this blog from this summer. When ‘working up a shark’, as we call it, we carefully and gently secure most of the sharks onto a special platform off the back of the boat (the stern) and in the short time it’s there we quickly collect all sorts of data including measurements, fin clips, muscle biopsies, blood samples and then we tag each shark using either a NOAA tag, acoustic tag or satellite tag.

Some species, such as the majestic and protected Great Hammerhead, never leave the water (I’ve included some pictures of our work this summer on these incredible animals as well) and in every single case great care is taken to respect the animal in every way and to release them as quickly as possible back into their natural environment.  The process is orchestrated like a symphony, a shark science symphony I would could call it, as each member of the team has a specific role for that day’s trip, has gone through extensive training and is supervised at all times by highly knowledgeable leaders with years of hands on field experience.

I’ve also, of course, been aboard many trips throughout my first two semesters that SRC has conducted and it was on one of those trips that I have one of my fondest memories of my first year. It was the first time that I had ever been offshore with the team, meaning we were in 100 feet deeper water than usual and had to add extension lines to our gear. It was an amazing day where we caught two bull sharks, two great hammerheads, and one tiger shark. I should mention that it was actually my first time ever seeing a great hammerhead and a tiger shark in person. It was such an exciting (and exhausting day) that I fell asleep as I was telling my family about our adventures and good fortune!

Coral Bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef

Coral reefs are some of planet earth’s most spectacular, diverse and important ecosystems. Our planet’s coral reefs provide important shelter, habitats, and a source of food for many different species of marine organisms. They also act as a critical food source to humans, as well a natural barrier to help protect our coastlines from hurricanes and associated storm surges. Sadly, coral reefs face growing risks including the possibility of extinction from a variety of stresses that leads to coral bleaching.

Coral bleaching is the process in which zooxanthellae, algae living symbiotically within the coral, are expelled from coral colonies due to a number of factors including an increase in temperature, decrease in pH, exposure to UV radiation, reduced salinity, and bacterial infections. Zooxanthellae provide the coral 30% of its nitrogen and 91% of its carbon needs to the coral host in exchange for a shelter, as well as waste produced by the coral from nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon dioxide that is required for the algae’s growth (Baird, 2002).

When corals bleach, it effects entire marine communities due to their immense diversity. Fish populations that reside around coral reefs “are the most species dense vertebrate communities on earth, contributing critical ecosystem functions and providing crucial ecosystem services to human societies in tropical countries” (Graham, 2008). Researchers have found that when an ecosystem endures physical coral loss, fish species richness is extremely likely to decline due to their heavy reliance on the coral colony itself (Graham, 2008).

Perhaps the most famous current example of coral bleaching is Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Scientists have determined that the main cause of Great Barrier Reef coral bleaching is induced thermal stress and that about 90% of the reef has been bleached since 1998 (Baird, 2002). As the corals bleach and temperatures increase, researchers have determined that shark and ray species that live in the area may be vulnerable to these climactic changes.

Most of the Great Barrier Reef is located on the mid-shelf of the ocean floor, the approximate mid-point between the shallower coast of Australia and the continental shelf where the ocean bottom significantly drops in depth. Researchers found that the mid-shelf is the area where most of the shark species studied reside, while most rays dwell in coastal waters or closer to the continental shelf. It was also found that both areas are the susceptible to rising temperature, increased storm frequency and intensity, increasing acidity, current alterations, and freshwater runoff, all being caused by climate change (Chin, 2010). Based on these findings, researchers have concluded that the areas these elasmobranchs live in should be protected and preserved. Species in these highly vulnerable areas should also be monitored and considered for future conservation actions, as many of the shark species are already experiencing the effects of climate change from some of the aforementioned factors.

Typically, sharks are considered some of the strongest animals on earth, and while they have lived on earth for at least 420 million years, they are slow to adapt. This slowness has impeded their ability to survive in our rapidly changing climate. In the near future it will be common to see some species of marine organisms demonstrate plasticity, the ability to adapt to their changing environment, but other species, such as elasmobranchs, are expected to simply distribute to other habitats in search of cooler waters. Even though sharks are a highly vulnerable species to climate change, they sit at the top of the trophic level in many different niches and, thus, wherever they migrate to, it will be easier for them to find food than it would be for other species such as fish or rays. However, this is most likely only the case for adult sharks as embryos and juvenile sharks may be more vulnerable to increased temperatures. For instance, researchers found that the survival of bamboo shark embryos decreased from 100% at current temperatures to 80% under future ocean temperature scenarios and that the embryonic period was also shortened, not allowing the embryo enough time to develop fully (Rosa, 2014).

To decrease the effects of climate change on coral bleaching, corrective and mitigation measures can be taken. By utilizing green energy sources such as implementing solar power or wind power, walking or biking, and driving electric cars, we can reduce our use of fossil fuels and carbon footprint, thus decreasing the amount of carbon dioxide polluting and warming our atmosphere and oceans. While underwater and not always visible, coral reefs are truly a vital part of our ecosystem and need to be cherished and protected for generations to come.
